Television

  •  - Das Erste Deutsche Fernsehen. This is one of two television stations overseen by the German government. Germans have to pay a special fee (Rundfunkgebuehr) when buying television and/or radio sets. This fee is used to pay for programming on ARD and ZDF (Zweites Deutsches Fernsehen). The ARD offers a wealth of information, including news and sports, but entertainment also plays an important role in the ARD's programming.
  •  - Das Zweite Deutsche Fernsehen. This station is also overseen by the German government. During the winter months the ZDF is broadcasting Europe's most popular and successful television game show: "Wetten dass..?" with Thomas Gottschalk.
  •  - RTL is Germany's most successful privately-owned television station. The station's programs include the German "Who wants to be a Millionaire?" (Wer wird Millionaer?), live sports broadcasts (including Champions League Soccer and Formula One Racing), and various dramatic series produced by the station.
  •  - RTL 2 is targeting a younger audience and was the birthplace of the controversial and worldwide successful reality-TV show "Big Brother".
  •  - SAT.1 is one of the most popular and successful privately-owned television stations in Germany. It was also one of the first, when the government lifted its restrictions on the German broadcasting system in the late 1980s. It targets a diverse audience with shows like the Wheel of Fortune (Das Gluecksrad), the Harald Schmidt Show (a late night talk show, similar to Letterman and Leno), and Star Trek (dubbed in German language).
